A Simple Example
Consider an employee portal that requires people to navigate five systems, remember multiple passwords, and decode internal language just to request time off.
The technology may be sophisticated. The process may be technically complete. But if people need workarounds, repeated support, or a colleague to explain it, the system has transferred its complexity onto them.
A human-centered system asks less of the person. It remembers context, uses clear language, and makes the next step obvious.
That is not convenience. It is functional empathy.
Leadership Insight
Leaders create friction when they confuse compliance with adoption.
A system can be mandatory and still be resisted. People may use it because they have to, while avoiding it whenever possible, inventing workarounds, or disengaging from the process entirely.
Adoption is different. It happens when the system makes sense in the reality of someone’s work, capacity, and priorities.
Empathy does not mean removing every challenge. It means ensuring that the challenge serves a purpose rather than compensating for poor design.
Application
Before building, leading, or deploying technology, ask:
How does this system shape around the human without reshaping the human to fit it?
Then ask:
- What unnecessary decisions does this require people to make?
- Whose time or attention is carrying the system’s complexity?
- What context is this system ignoring?
- Would people choose to use it if they were not required to?
If the system requires the human to adapt excessively, it will fail or create resistance.
If the system adapts to the human, it is far more likely to be adopted and sustained.
